Help - I need some inspiration. A friend has asked me to stitch a birth sampler for her grandson and I'd like to find something not too baby-ish or cartoonish. I've been searching through what patterns I have and nothing is really jumping out at me.
So does anyone has any suggestions? Many thanks!

I really like the Birth Sampler by Drawn Thread. I have stitched it for my grandson and started one for my granddaughter. It would make a nice heirloom.
What about Blackbird Designs Sailing Home? I think it makes a lovely birth sampler for a baby boy. Good luck in your search. :)
I once stitched SB's Sailor Collar as a birth sampler. Turned out great!
With My Needle's Adorn Thy Heart can easily be turned into a birth sampler
Another vote here for the Drawn Thread Birth Sampler.
Also, Heirloom Birth Sampler by Victoria Sampler is one that I am currently working on for a friend.
I've stitched Drawn Thread's Birth Sampler 3 times. I love it.
Cricket Collection has a lovely one - I'm not sure of the title, but it includes a phrase about little boys sailing away on a sea of adventure.
You could try The Annuouncement from Moira Blackburn - very traditional but not too large, and lovely insects and animals for the child to look at when they are older. I've stitched it for 3 nieces now.

I've turned several different patterns into birth samplers just by rearranging the design a little bit. I try to find a design that coordinates with the nursery theme, then personalize it as necessary, either by adding a border with the vital information, or fitting it somewhere into the pattern.
Long Dog also has a nice one called Bienvenue: http://www.123stitch.com/cgi-perl/itemdetail.pl?item=LD36
Don't limit yourself to baby patterns. A little imagination goes a long way!
I stitched Just Nan's Birth Sampler for my son. It looks great in his room now and is something that fit nicely in most other areas of our home once he gets older.
And yet another vote for The Drawn Thread's Birth Sampler. :) It's so elegant and lovely. It also doesn't take long to stitch up. There's a (very bad) photo here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/concettar/2460891333/sizes/o/in/set-72157604861522333/
I also love Baby Garden by Just Nan. I stitched this for my BF's daughter in 2007. You can see it in my Flickr album here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/concettar/2461772858/sizes/l/in/set-72157604856879982/
HTH. I'll look forward to hearing what you decide on!
I'm currently doing My Big Toe's baby sampler for IVF twins cos it says "for this child I prayed and the Lord answered", should you be looking for a more 'serious' style.
Yes it's cartoony but Humphrey is lovely. Tatty Ted is a pain to do the back stitch but they do look good when finished.
I like those washing line ones. And how about Bent Creek's Baby Row?
Just my two cents worth, LOL
I did the Birth sampler from Lavendar and Lace years ago for my son. I think it's just the sweetest design, but may be too much stitching for what yo're looking for.
I too have stitched the Drawn Thread's Birth band. It's the best!
Some of the other Victoria Sampler designs, like "Child of Spring" and "Autumn Romance" aren't birth samplers but can be adapted. "Child of Spring" is pictured in pink, but has a list of blue colors to use for boys.
What about Bent Creek's 'Baby Globe'. Not a sampler as such, but cute nonetheless.
Last year I stitched The Workbasket's freebie baby crib "sampler." It was quick and came out very lovely. As it was for a boy, I used various blue and brown tones and I was pleased with the finish. I added his name and the birthdate. Check it out on their site!
My vote is for Heart in Hand's Heirloom Baby Sampler. I did it for my grandson. It's very traditional and has a Mark Twain quote. I love it!
One more vote for the Drawn Thread's Birth Sampler. Very pretty. And I LOVE your ornie finishes in the previous post...holy smokes you've been busy. And, I truly love how you finished your L*K into a pinkeep. Good idea with that one!
There are too many things you could do. Try a google images search for "birth samplers". I really liked this one: http://www.angelbees.com/catalog/images/KAN-PSC506.jpg
You could turn almost anything into a sampler. Take your favourite elements and make your own design.
I have stitched The Good Huswife's Birth Sampler many times. It is a beautiful piece with a lovely phrase that stitches up quite quickly. I changed the threads (5 colors total) to coordinate with the nursery.
Another piece I love is Heart in Hand's Heirloom Baby Sampler. The chart gives color variation for a boy or girl.
I also like the idea of writing a note to the baby that I will attach to the back of the frame in an envelope. I share my thoughts and hope for their happy future.
Shepherd's Bush, The Promise, also makes a lovely birthday sampler. What's a bigger promise than the life of a child?
