Lately

Over a week ago, New Zealand was devastated to learn about the Christchurch Terrorist Attack. An  event of this kind is unprecedented in our country.

I was very shaken and saddened by this and my thoughts are with everyone in the city of Christchurch, the bereaved families and friends, the Muslim Community, the NZ Police, emergency staff and hospital staff that dealt with the aftermath, and all the other agencies involved since.

While our country grieves, we have been heartened by the coming together of people - all religions and ethnicities to offer support, help and be there for each other. This is what New Zealand does best, in times of crisis, just like after the Christchurch and Kaikoura Earthquakes, people don't hesitate to show an outpouring of love and support for each other.

Following the attacks, our Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern has said that New Zealand represents diversity, kindness and compassion and we are very proud of our multicultural community, and those values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.

There has been an outpouring of love within the country, and from around the world. There have been many vigils, marches and gatherings for people to express their sorrow and sadness, and to pay respect to the lives lost.  Last Friday afternoon, there was a nationwide two minute silence observed throughout the country.  This coming Friday there will be national service of remembrance held in Christchurch.

Kia Kaha.

Our thoughts & prayers have been with you all in NZ. My neighbour is from Christchurch and she too was very shaken up. Here in Perth there have been memorial services & in the city there was a haka & corroborree to show respect.

I was deeply affected when I heard about the Christchurch assassination, how bad it must be for the relatives when the loved ones are suddenly taken out of their lives. And one wonders - what makes a person to commit such an assassination.
I pray for the families.

As you probably know, we have faced this many times in the US. I was shocked when I heard about the shooting at Christchurch. I still can't understand that kind of hate. New Zealand has been in my thoughts and prayers. Know that the world stands with you! Lori
