Our country has declared a national emergency, and the nation is in shock. Offers for help have come in from around the world with several hundred Urban rescuers from many countries helping with the search and recovery.
My family and I live many miles from Christchurch, up in the North Island, so we didn't even feel the earthquake. My parents have friends who were holidaying in the city and went through the horrible ordeal but we are blessed that they are now home safe.
Our hearts and prayers are with everyone.

A tragedy for Christchurch.
Last time I was there in 2006 I loved visiting the arts precinct and bought some hand dyed thread there.

Stay safe.

Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is affected by this.
Oh, this is such a tragedy for Christchurch...The photos we've been seeing on the evening news are just devastating. Please know your fellow New Zealanders are in our thoughts and prayers...
So frightening. Glad you and your loved ones are safe and prayers for all who are not.
So terrible !! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
My prayers have been for those waiting to be rescued and those rescuing--for the healing of their minds and bodies.
I am from Southern California. A good bit of my hometown was demolished in a 6.0 quake when I was 7 years old. I remember it well- I was on the schoolbus and terrified. It was my first major quake. More would come later as I grew older, but the feeling of helplessness... you can never outgrow that.
We can do little about Earthquakes other than to be prepared and to help those who need it after the quake. They just happen and they are scary and random. They are no one's fault. Sending my best wishes to you and your countrymen.
I am happy that you and your family. What a terrible tragedy for your fellow countrymen.
I hope that you all recover and that no further quakes shake the country.
The first night it happened I was at work until really late - but the first thing I did was hunt through the TV channels when I got home so I can watch the news, and sat stunned and in tears watching it all unfold ... just dreadful and heartbreaking :(
The lovely people of Christchurch.....they will rebuild.....I posted some pictures of the cathedral I took several years ago when I and some friends of mine walked the Queen Charlotte Track....the cathedral will rise again as will Christchurch!!!!!
